What branded pens cost

A real price, not a starting-from number

The cheap headline numbers you see advertised on pens are unit rates before setup, and setup is what actually decides your bill on a small run. Here is a real one from our catalogue. 125 Byron pens, one colour pad print, one position, works out at $239 plus GST. That is $1.91 each with the setup already in it. The same pen at 500 units drops the each price sharply, because that setup is spread further.

Why the each price falls so fast

Decoration setup is charged once per colour per position, no matter how many pens you order. On 100 pens the setup can be a third of your bill. On 1,000 it barely registers. So if you are close to a price break, going up is almost always better value than going down. The calculator on every product here shows you the real breaks, so you can see exactly where that happens.

Plastic, metal or eco

Plastic pens are the workhorse and where most orders land. Metal pens cost more per unit but feel like a gift rather than a handout, so they suit client thank-yous and conference satchels. Eco pens made from recycled plastic, bamboo, cork or wheat straw sit in between, and 17 of the pens here carry an eco flag. If you supply to councils, schools or tender work, that flag is worth having.

One colour or full colour

Most pens are pad printed in one colour, matched to a Pantone reference from your brand. Some barrels take a second colour or a second position, and each of those adds a setup. Full colour wraps are available on a smaller group of pens where the barrel suits it. If your logo has gradients or a photograph in it, tell us early, because that decides which pens are actually possible.

What the Coast uses branded pens for

Real estate

Open homes, appraisal packs and settlement gifts. Agents order pens more often than any other promotional line on the Coast, usually alongside corflute and DL flyers.

Trades and services

Left behind after a quote. A plumber or sparky who leaves a pen on the bench is still there in three weeks when the tap starts dripping again.

Conferences and expos

Satchel fillers and stand giveaways. Cheap enough to hand out freely, useful enough that people keep them instead of binning them at the airport.

Schools and clubs

Enrolment packs, fundraising and committee stationery. Usually paired with notebooks or lanyards in the one order.

Medical and allied health

Reception desks and referral packs. Practices tend to order plain, clean-looking pens rather than novelty ones.

Councils and community groups

Consultation days, libraries and info sessions, where Australian Made and recycled options get asked about in the brief.

Artwork for promotional products

Send a vector file: EPS, AI or PDF with the fonts outlined. A JPG or PNG taken off a website cannot be screen printed or engraved cleanly at product size. Send your brand colours as Pantone references too, because decoration is colour matched to Pantone rather than CMYK, and a colour that looks right on screen will not necessarily mix the same in ink.

Decoration areas are smaller than people expect. If your logo has fine detail, small type or a tagline, it may need simplifying to survive at 35mm wide. We will tell you before you commit, and you will see it on the mockup at actual size. If all you have is a low resolution logo, say so and we will redraw it.

Frequently asked questions

How much do 100 branded pens cost?

It depends on the pen, but a common answer sits between $150 and $300 plus GST for 100 pens with a one colour print, including the setup. A plastic stick pen lands at the low end and a metal pen in a box lands well above it. Every pen on this page has its own calculator so you can price your own quantity rather than relying on an average.

What is the minimum order on pens?

Most pens start at 100 or 125 units and the first break is shown on each product. Some lines start at 250. Below the first break the setup makes the per-unit price hard to justify, which is why suppliers set them where they do.

How long do branded pens take?

Around seven to ten working days for standard production once you approve the artwork, plus freight to you. Most pens also offer a faster service at a higher unit rate, and both are shown at quote time so you can pick.

What file do you need for my logo?

A vector file, so EPS, AI or PDF with the fonts outlined. A JPG or PNG pulled off a website will not pad print cleanly at pen size. It also helps to know your brand colours as Pantone references, because pen decoration is colour matched to Pantone and not CMYK.

Can I get my logo in more than one colour on a pen?

On some pens yes, but each extra colour is another setup and another registration step at pen scale. On a barrel that is only 35mm wide, a one colour print of a clean logo almost always looks better than two colours squeezed in. We will tell you honestly if your logo will not hold up.

Do you have Australian Made pens?

A small number, and they are flagged in the range. Most pens sold in Australia are imported. If Australian Made is a hard requirement for your job, look at the Australian Made range where magnets, lanyards and printed items give you more to work with.

Can I see my logo on the pen before you print?

Yes. You get a visual mockup showing your logo in position and at size, and nothing goes to production until you approve it.
